5 Ways to Ensure Your Emails Get Read!

If you are like most of us, you wake up to an inbox full of newsletters, promotions, eBlasts, etc, etc, etc. Unless you have a time machine that I don’t know about, no one has time to sit and sift through each one. So, how do you choose which emails to open and which to banish to the trash? Marketers everywhere strive to get their emails opened, and luckily, there are a few ways to achieve a higher open rate.

Below are 5 ways to ensure that your emails get noticed.

1. Subject lines. Subject lines are a key component to maximizing a higher open rate. Plain and simple, we pay attention to subject lines, and will see most of them even as we scroll quickly down our inbox. Short, catchy, and explanatory subject lines are sure to catch the eye of your reader. Be sure not to give the entire contents of the newsletter away in your subject line, tease your audience, and entice them to want to know what is inside.

2. Content. Believe it or not, content is king. Keep your emails short and easy to read. Most people do not have 20 minutes to sit and digest your email. You need to keep the attention of your reader, and not overwhelm them with complex content. Keep content relevant to current trends, and something that your reader finds valuable.

3. Timing. Ever heard the saying, “timing is everything?” Well, this could not be more true for email marketing campaigns as well. Many studies have been done, including our own testing that shows there are, in fact, dates and times that receive higher open rates than others do. For example, mid-week eBlasts are more likely to be opened than emails sent on Mondays and Weekends. Emails that were sent midday were also more likely to be opened than early morning or night broadcasts. This makes sense, since most people tend to be more relaxed with their inboxes as the day goes on.

4. Your personality. Connect with your readers. People are more likely to open a newsletter that speaks to them. Cut out the technical terms and talk TO your client or customer instead of AT them. Your tone should be understanding and knowledgeable, portraying leadership and providing a solution to your reader’s needs.

5. Include a call to action. A clear and precise call to action lets your readers know what you want. You would be surprised how many people will do something just because you ask them to. If you want them to download your new mobile app, tell them! If you want them to sign up for a webinar, draw their attention to a graphic or button that allows them to click and register. Make it easy for them to act.

So, there you have it, 5 ways to increase your open rate and the success of your email marketing campaigns.
