SEO Best Practices

Search engine optimization, SEO, blah blah blah. You know what it is, but you do not know how to accomplish it without spending a fortune. This is the problem that many businesses experience when trying to increase their website traffic. When speaking about SEO, most people have heard the terms meta-tags, coding, title tags, etc. Even though these are still crucial for SEO, what seem to be increasingly as important in the recent years are content, design, and social.

The basics of SEO all still exist, however it is important to adapt with the current trends, and SEO is no exception. We are going to take a look at the current trends in SEO and how you can incorporate them to ensure your website pops up on that glorious and coveted first page.

  1. The Title Tag. Your title tag is the name you give your page. It tells search engines what the page is about. Each title tag should be unique and include both primary and secondary keywords, as well as your brand name. Title tags should be less than 66 characters and contain dashes to separate keyword phrases. For example: Benefits-of-CRM, BusinessEssentials-Webinars. 
  2. On-page Content. The content on your page should not only be unique, it should contain phrases and ideas relevant to your keywords. Updated and exclusive content ranks higher in search engines, so keep the meat on your pages fresh, relevant and make sure it is your very own content and not something that was produced on another website or blog.

A few tips to keeping your content keyword friendly:

  • Do not overuse your key phrases. Limit their frequency on any page to about 4 times.
  • Get creative with your keywords. Play with your phrases and use variations of them, within reason of course. For example, one of BusinessEssentials’s keywords is CRM, which we can also interchange with Customer Relationship Management.
  • Do not just copy and paste content that can be found on many different websites, for example, your blogs or press releases. Share this content with links instead (See below for Why in Trend #4).
  1. Name your images. All images on a page should be named appropriately. ALT Tags is the term used for the name of an image. Make sure you describe what your image is by incorporating your keywords and phrases. However, just like your on-page content, do not overdo it. It is also a good idea to use dashes instead of spaces or underscores. This makes the phrases easier to read in search engines.
  2. Page linking. Linking from page to page within your site helps to strengthen your keywords and phrases. For example, if you are on your features page, and mention pricing, make sure to link to the pricing page. The link should contain any of your keywords or phrases.
  3. Webpage Simplicity. Make your content easy to scan through. This means, make sure your content is not overwhelming. Separate content with bullet points, different fonts (not too many), and sizes, etc. Visitors scan your content searching deliberately for words that they searched for in the first place. Do not clutter your content, and highlight what search engines find relevant.

SEO is a term constantly spoken about in the marketing world, and is crucial to any online website. Follow these best practices and you are well on your way to moving on up…on the first page, that is.
